Liquid Liners... They promise crisp black lines, smooth application, and smudge-proof perfection. You buy a couple of them and then... You end up looking like a panda and they end up in your makeup drawers, untouched and left to dry up in makeup hell. As a makeup artist, I LOVE using liquid liners. You get a strong black line in one swipe, but I have to admit, at the beginning it was a pain to use and it takes a bit of practice.

Here are some of my step by step instructions on how to use you're liquid liner as well as some answers to common questions I get about them!

I'll be using a liquid liner pen. But you can use a liquid liner in a pot that comes with a brush as well.

Step 1:

Start in the inner corner. I find the best way to use Liquid Liners is laying it on its side, instead of making it point directly at your lash line. Keep your grip on your liner firm but not too tight. If you tense up your hand, it will be harder to move and it will start shaking.

Ciari's Quick Tip:

Don't look straight at a mirror, especially if you have small or hooded eyes. Looking DOWN at a mirror held below you nose is the best way to apply liners. This position keep your eyes from drying up too quickly and blinking so often, as well as you get a better view of where you want your eyeliner to be.

Step 2:

Move towards the middle in a smooth motion. Do not feel the need to draw one straight line right away. Lift your liner from time to time by drawing small lines and connecting them.

Keep your hand flexible. Keep moving your hand to comfortable positions. Again, this stops your hand from shaking because of awkward positions.

Step 3:

When you get to the end, you want the tip to taper off nicely and not be a blunt end. Lift the pen a little and lower your hand to end the line smoothly. (the liner should be facing upwards a little)

And there you go! :D

FAQ

- My hands keep shaking! How do I keep them steady?

Use your face as an anchor. Keep part of your hand planted on your face. This will keep your hand stable and significantly stop your hand from shaking.

Base of my thumb is touching my face

- My hands STILL shake!

Keep your elbow on the makeup table. Adds even more stability but it might restrict your movement.

- How can I make the lines smoother?

Practice makes perfect! But, instead of just keeping your head steady, move it smoothly to make lining easier While you're moving your pen to the right, move your face slow to the left. Try it! it makes a huge difference when done right.

- How can I make it last all day?

Liquid liners are made to last, but if you have oily eyelids you're gonna start to see them move a little. The best way to keep them lasting all night is by setting it. Get a black (or whatever shade your liner is) eyeshadow and a pointed cotton bud. (a regular cotton bud will do if you don't have a pointed one) Get some shadow on the cotton and run it along the line your just drew. Its the same principle as setting your foundation with powder to keep it from fading and getting oily.

There you go! Grab some liquid liner and try it out!
