Matte Lips... A retro staple that found itself in the mainstream, thanks to Instagram "makeup artists" and Kylie Jenner.

What's my take on matte lips? I love them! IF used properly. These matte formulas are VERY TRICKY to apply, and when used incorrectly, can take you from classy to trashy.

What are the differences between a matte lipstick and you usual lipstick? Mattes, especially liquid mattes set in a snap. Which means you have to work quickly to be able to apply it smoothly. Regular lipsticks are a little more forgiving, it does not set like a liquid lipstick giving you lots of wiggle room to perfect your pout. Another thing that makes a matte lipstick a little more difficult is its staying power. Yes, we all like a lipstick to last us the entire day, but a matte lip WILL. STAY. PUT - Making your mistakes harder to remove/correct. Although it usually lasts the whole day, an issue that I hear most from my clients is if/when it fades slightly, they get uneven fading or their lips look patchy. Lastly, mattes are very drying and they make dry lips look even dryer.

I'll be showing you how I apply a liquid matte lipstick on my clients without trouble and how I make sure it looks and feels great all day

Before we begin, make sure to put on some lip balm at least 10 minutes before you apply your lipstick. You can do this before you start applying your makeup.

I'll be using the Sleek Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Cream in the shade Birthday Suit.

Ciari's Quick Tip:

Slather on some lip balm right after the shower or right after you wash your face. This way ensures that the moisture you got from the shower is sealed in by the lip balm. If you can't shower, just wet your lips with water before you put lip balm on!

Before we begin with the lips, gently remove the lip balm with a cotton pad. Make sure you get it all and that your lips are not oily or shiny.

Step 1:

Line the outside of your lips with nude lipliner and blend with your finger.

Why outside? Keeping the lips clear of any other product will prevent uneven fading. it will also prevent the lipstick from feathering. Also, having a clear outline will help you with an easier application. Think of it like a coloring book!

Pro Tip: When lining the upper lip, start from the corner of your mouth moving upwards to the cupids bow. Doing it this way will make your lips look fuller and plumper. Moving down from the cupids bow will give you a straight and harsh line - thinning and ageing your lips.

Step 2:

Start from the bottom- Stretch out your lips and apply a THIN layer of the liquid lipstick from one side of your mouth to the other. Move quickly and in long smooth strokes.

Press your lips together while the bottom lipstick is still wet and move on to the upper lip.

Again, use upward strokes moving towards the cupids bow.

Get those corners! The inner corners of lips are usually shiny and for some - are more pigmented than the rest of their lips. Forgetting to put in those places will be VERY, VERY obvious with a matte liquid lipstick.

If you feel the need for another layer, wait for your first layer to dry and repeat the process.

Step 3:

The clean up.

Clean up your mistakes by taking a concealer brush with a little bit of concealer and go over the edges. Blend the concealer with a brush or your fingers.

Step 4:

Matte lipsticks are drying. The best solution for dry lips is a lip balm, but lip balms are shiny. You don't wan't to put shine all over your hard work. So whats the secret?

Men's lip balm! Lip balm made for men are hydrating but formulated to have little to no shine! It's the perfect partner to the matte lip.

You want to apply this lip balm in a patting motion with your fingers. It's best to apply this OVER your lipstick because applying it under will change the consistency of the liquid lipstick, making it fade easier and no longer matte.

And voila! You're done!
